SIXTEEN

June 26, 2022, Sunday

Four days after returning from North Carolina, her body was healing and the bruising on Jackson’s forehead had spread under his left eye in spectacular fashion. He looked like the loser of some epic prizefight.

Elana made a small breakfast, since they would be going to Zoey’s for brunch after services, as usual. Jackson disappeared to get dressed and she cleaned up the kitchen and let the dogs out in the pen beside the house.

The time in the water had damaged her skin and several places were raw and oozing. Despite her sore body and raw wounds, she put on her best dress and a hat to cover some of the damage to her skin, got Phoebe ready, and off they went.

She moved through the day robotically: services, accepting the outpouring of concern from the congregation afterward, brunch at Zoey’s, and the inevitable chaos of when you combine children with a swimming pool. Home at last, Jackson settled to watch baseball in the den and she retrieved the dogs for their walk.

“Phoebe, do you want to go to the park with me and the dogs?” It was one of the places Elana did not need permission to visit because Jackson approved of any exercise his dogs could get.

“Yes!”

“Then into a play dress.”

Phoebe skipped away.

A few minutes later, Elana walked three dogs toward the park accompanied by her daughter, riding her bike. Once on the empty soccer field, Phoebe chose a stick and Elana released the dogs from their leashes. The three exuberant pointers leapt before her daughter as Elana settled on a bench, sweating in the shade, as storm clouds billowed threatening rain.

Despite the restriction of the tight bodice of her dress, Phoebe could really fling that branch. The stick spiraled out and away. The dogs tore after it, Gunner in the lead and Chase and Dash close behind.

A woman sat beside her. Elana turned to smile and nod.

But the smile fell away, dropped like a glass bottle on concrete. There beside her on the bench was FBI Special Agent Inga.

“Hello, Elana.”

“I can’t talk to you.”

“Of course, you can. It’s just a conversation.”

“Not without a lawyer.” Elana fixed her eyes on Phoebe and the dogs, hopping and frantic for another throw.

“I see. Well, I’ll talk then. We found Raelyn. Shantel Keen’s daughter.”

Hope exploded like a bursting firework.

“Alive?”

The agent glanced away. “No. Unfortunately, no. She’s dead. A homicide.”

Elana folded at the waist, both hands tight over her mouth and eyes squeezed shut.

“Oh, no,” she muttered. She thought back to the photograph Agent Inga had shown her, of a little blue-eyed girl smiling broadly at her birthday party.

“Yes, I’m afraid so. Killed shortly after her abduction according to the ME. My partner and I are heading over to inform your husband and to see if he might have anything to help us find Raelyn’s killer.”

Killer.

She’s still missing. Did you know that?

“I thought you might want to know before you head home.”

Oh my God! Jackson would be livid. Enraged.

“You’re certain you found her?”

“Positive ID.
